Location Scouting
The location of our film plays a key role in getting the gritty independent film style we are going for. Whilst deciding where we wanted to film we went to a number of different locations.
The first location we looked at is an area in a field with suitable aesthetics for our film opening. While we were there, we recording a draft opening of test shots to evaluate whether or not the location was suitable for our film. We found that with the space the location had we could take the shots that we wanted and still achieve the atmosphere we needed for our opening.
While none of these shots may be used in the actual film opening, we filmed this draft to gain an idea of the types of shots that will be possible and work in the opening.
The location is out of the way so that civilians will not walk past, ruining the shots - we have more control over our filming conditions since this is not a public area. Also, due to it being away from other people, we can use the gun props without alarming passers-by. Since this is someone's land we will need to ask permission to use it so that the owner understands what we are doing.
The next location we looked at was a multi-story car park in town since it has fairly low key lighting and will achieve a gritty feel if utilised correctly.
This location would work well as it would add a more urban feel to the style of the film. However, shooting in this location would limit us as we would not be able to use the gun props, for fear of passers-by calling the police. Also, in this location, we would have limited control over the surroundings as it is a public place, with many people. That is to say, anyone walking or driving past may interrupt the shoot therefore meaning we would need to re-take it.
This picture is of
Hylands park and our group has is considering using this as an area in which to
film. We wanted to film in this area since it is open and therefore there is
plenty of room for the fight scene some areas in the park are fairly quiet
therefore we can use out gun props in this area as well as film without any of
the general public entering a shot whilst we are filming.
This may not be the best place because it is a public area
so people are still around and it will be hard to use gun props and take them
through the site since people may become worried and call the police.
We have decided to film in this location since it is fairly
isolated and is a wide area so we have plenty of space to film. This area is
mostly empty giving therefore no members of the public will walk through the
shot while we are filming and we can carry our gun props through the site
without panic or worry. In this location there is plenty of space for camera
movement and long shots.
Disadvantages are that this area is wide and open therefore
wind may hit the microphone therefore creating background noise and possibly running
the audio for our film. Another disadvantage is that this is private land and
therefore we will ask to ask permission and use it and we may not be able to
use it all together if we are denied access.
Here is a picture of the locations we were going to originally
use. It was a privet location which meant we would have been able to shoot all
of the action scenes that we needed to without having any problems with the
public. However the layout of the farm would not have worked very well for what
we wanted to use. We were unable to use this location in the end as building
work was due to start a week before the shoot.
